Welcome to the page created by the Assembly of the Republic for the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union.

During the second semester of 2007, the Portuguese Parliament will carry out the parliamentary function of the Portuguese presidency. In addition to the debates with the Government in plenary session and within Specialised Permanent Committees, determined in the national legislation for the parliamentary scrutiny of the European Councils and EU Council, it will promote a series of inter-parliamentary meetings of a European scope, for the discussion of priority subjects on the Union’s political agenda.

Thus, the Specialised Permanent Committees of all the National Parliaments of the EU and the European Parliament will hold meetings at the Assembly of the Republic, on Justice and Home Affairs, Foreign Policy and Common Security, (as well as on relations between the European Union and Africa), the Common Security and Defence Policy and the financing and own funds of the European Union. The Chairpersons of the Committees on Constitutional Affairs, Foreign Affairs, National Defence and Budget and Finance of the Assembly of the Republic will preside over these meetings.

The Committee on European Affairs will organise the XXXVIII COSAC (Conference of Community and European Affairs Committees of Parliaments of the European Union), preceded by a preparatory meeting, with the chairpersons of the abovementioned Committees. The Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of the Assembly of the Republic will preside over both of these events.
